Tim McTague - Underoath PCM Interview

Underoath Bio

After the release of Lost In The Sound Of Separation, it's evident that the six men of Tampa, FL-based Underoath--who are known for being both heavy and experimental--have delivered their most ambitious and accomplished album to date. This follow up to the rapturously received and gold-certified Define The Great Line is a hard music masterpiece.

Underoath's last three albums have a combined sales count in excess of one million copies and has built one of the biggest metalcore followings in the world. The band seems to have an unbreakable bond with fans due to incessant touring with a reputation for unrelentingly intense live shows. That allegiance earned the group a startling 2 debut for Define The Great Line on Billboard's Top 200 Album Chart for first week sales exceeding 98,000 copies and marking the highest chart debut for a Tooth & Nail artist. Underoath also earned a Grammy nomination for "Best Short Form Music Video" for the surrealistic video for the album's lead single "Writing On The Walls." Critical acclaim for its thrilling mix of mayhem and melody, catharsis and experimentation came from both music and mainstream press alike. Alternative Press called the album "transcendent." The Los Angeles Times took note of how "the album delves into new sonic territory, exploring phasing and untried guitar sounds..." And USA Today was unbridled in its praise of how "...singer Spencer Chamberlain howls against jagged riffs and rhythms that shift so suddenly he sounds like he's walking an active fault line."

Their dedicated fans and enlightened scribes will surely embrace Lost In The Sound Of Separation based on audience reaction to the new material on Underoath's summer 2008 trek headlining the Hot Topic stage on the Rockstar Energy Mayhem Tour, alongside the likes of Slipknot, Disturbed and Mastodon.

Interview from Warped Tour 2009

PCM's Rebekah was able to chat with guitarist Tim McTauge of Underoath at Van's Warped Tour in Camden, NJ.

Show Review from Warped Tour 2009:
By: Rebekah Miller
Seeing Underoath live at Warped Tour was an unforgettable experience. The insane energy from the crowd seemed to feed off of the band's captivating stage presence.

As I stood there ready for the show to begin, I was rather afraid of the pulsating crowd behind me. The fans were so pumped to see Underoath that they threw shoes, water bottles, sunglasses and whatever else they had in hand toward the stage. The second Underoath took the stage, the crowd let out a roar and the crowd surfing and moshing began.

Lead vocalist, Spencer Camberlain, kept the crowd entertained with is signature screams and sporadic body movements as he ran all over the stage, stopping periodically to reach his arm up toward the sky. He even went out to greet the excited crowd who reached up to him as if they were going to pull him into the mosh pit.

Even the guitarists and bassist of Underoath were full of energy on stage as they moved and jumped around. Being at the back of the stage behind the drums was no disadvantage for drummer and vocalist, Aaron Gillespie. He intensely pounded on his drums while head-banging and flinging his long red hair into the air. Gillespie stole the attention when he stood up on his drums and showcased his amazing vocals.

The guys of Underoath certainly know their way around a stage and their fans truly appreciate every moment of their performance. Underoath kept the crowd entertained with their intense energy the whole way through their set at the Camden, NJ stop on Warped Tour 2009.
